YouTube's Shorts gets rolled out in over 100 countries

By Emmanuel Legrand

YouTube's short-format video service Shorts has launched in beta version in more than 100 countries, following successful tests in India, where it was available since September 2020, and in the US since March 2021.

The service was then extended to reach a total of 26 territories, mainly in Latin America. It has now significantly expanded its footprint in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Shorts, which is Google's answer to TikTok, allows individuals and creators to film and make available on the platform through their mobile phone short videos lasting less than a minute. The Alphabet-owned company said its YouTube Shorts player has over 6.5 billion daily views since its launch.

The next big frontier

“We want to make it easy and fun to create Shorts” said Todd Sherman, Global Product Manager for YouTube Shorts. “As we continue to build Shorts alongside our creators and artists, we’ll be adding more features for users to try.”

Lyor Cohen, YouTube Global Head of Music, added: “YouTube has helped artists from all generations showcase their catalogue of work for music fans around the world. YouTube Shorts is the next big frontier of a fast-growing platform that is centered on connecting artists and fans, around the love of music."
