Roblox agreement with BMG brings the fourth largest music catalogue to the video gaming platform

Bertelsmann's music division BMG has signed a strategic agreement with Robloxthat puts an end to BMG claims relating to the use of its publishing and recording catalogues by the video gaming platform.

The statement issued by the two companies is scarce on details about the agreement, but it can be assumed that from now on, BMG's repertoire is going to be fully licensed for use on the platform. The statement does not specify either if a settlement was paid to BMG by Roblox. Interestingly, BMG was not among the group of music publishing companies that sued Roblox on June 9 for massive copyright infringement.

The companies said the agreement will "bring the vision of BMG to the Roblox metaverse." BMG VP Global Digital Partnerships & Strategy Christopher Ludwig said Roblox had "transformed the gaming experience for millions and is proving a powerful way to introduce new generations to music they love" and that BMG was "delighted to embrace the opportunities Roblox presents."

Empowering the community of creators

"BMG’s artist-centric approach and boldness in bringing state-of-the art technology to help maximize their success is very much in line with Roblox’s focus on empowering our community of creators," added Jon Vlassopulos, Vice President and Global Head of Music, Roblox. "Our partnership with BMG will enable them to do what they do best; and that’s to empower incredible talent with new ways to reach and engage fans, and create innovative new commercial opportunities."

The companies stated that for artists, labels and publishers, Roblox "provides a unique and creative way to engage and attract millions of fans as well as drive new revenue streams through virtual launch parties and concerts, integrated in-experience music and virtual merchandise."
