Facebook teams with TuneCore and DistroKid to allow independent artists to share their music on the social media's platforms

By Emmanuel Legrand

Facebook has launched the Facebook Independent Artist Program, which will help independent artists and creators to share their music across the social media's platform, Facebook and Instagram. Digital distribution companies for DIY artists, TuneCore and DistroKid, have been picked as distribution partners for the launch of the new programme.

"Undistributed artists and creators can now easily distribute their music for use on Facebook and Instagram products like Stories, Reels, and anywhere else we offer a music library," said the company in a blogpost. "We’ve partnered with preferred third-party music distribution companies to help you get your music on Facebook and Instagram quickly, seamlessly and at no cost to you. Make your music available to millions of people across Facebook apps and technologies — free of charge — and be the soundtrack to people’s social experiences."

To get their music on Facebook and Instagram, artists have to pick one of the preferred distribution partners, and once completed the music delivery process with the chosen distributor, their music will be available for people to use on music products like Stories, Reels, and anywhere else Facebook offers a music library.

Access to data and insights

"You’ll get paid for the use of your music based on the terms of your chosen distributor," reads the post. "Additionally, you’ll have access to certain data and insights about your music’s performance, which also varies by distributor."

Facebook Music Business Development Manager Chris Papaleo said Facebook was "proud to make it easier for independent artists and creators to reach new audiences on our platform and build community through music. When joining our Independent Artist Program, creators are backed by our outstanding distribution partners, allowing them to get their music in front of more people, across all of our apps.”

Believe-owned TuneCore said the expanded partnership with Facebook "offers artists more opportunities to connect with fans around the world and be the soundtrack to people’s social experiences." The company said artists will be able to upload their music to TuneCore "via an easy music delivery process and get paid every time their music is used to create content across Facebook and Instagram products."

A gateway for indie artists

“These days we are seeing a leveling of the playing field as discovery is happening via social media and no longer solely dependent on industry executives and DJs handpicking hits," said Stated Andreea Gleeson, Co-head and Chief Revenue Officer, at TuneCore. "With the popularity of short form videos, Facebook Stories and Instagram Reels are two important platforms on which fans are finding songs and artists, with careers being made when songs go viral. The Facebook Independent Artist Program provides an even greater gateway for indie artists from around the world to be heard.”

Instagram has made its Reels advertising programme available worldwide. The product was initially launched in India, Brazil, Germany and Australia in April, with Canada, France, the UK and the US joining in May. "After testing in select countries, today we’re launching Reels ads to the world," said the Facebook-owned company. "Reels is the best place on Instagram to reach people who don’t follow you and a growing global stage where brands and creators can be discovered by anyone. These ads will help businesses reach greater audiences, allowing people to discover inspiring new content from brands and creators."
