Apple and Amazon commit to offer hi-res audio quality

By Emmanuel Legrand

Both Amazon and Apple have announced that they will be providing better sound quality files to their subscribers, joining the likes of Qobuz and TIDAL that already offer high-end audio files to their subscribers.

Starting in June, Apple Music subscribers will have access a no extra cost to over 75 million tracks in CD quality Lossless Audio using ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec). The service will also start adding thousands of tracks in Spatial Audio, a format supporting DolbyAtmos, offering immersive audio experiences with multidimensional sound and clarity.

“Apple Music is making its biggest advancement ever in sound quality,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats. “Listening to a song in Dolby Atmos is like magic. The music comes from all around you and sounds incredible. Apple Music as we know it is about to change forever.”

Meanwhile, Amazon Music said that its high-quality streaming tier, Amazon Music HD, will be available to all eligible Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers at no extra cost. Amazon Music HD offers access to more than 70 million lossless, High Definition (HD) songs. It also features 7 million songs in Ultra HD, an even higher resolution.

“When we first launched Amazon Music HD, our goal was to lead the industry by enabling music fans around the world to stream the best quality recording, the way artists intended their music to be heard,” said Steve Boom, VP of Amazon Music. “We’re thrilled now to make Amazon Music HD available to everyone at no extra cost. All music fans should have access to this quality of music, and now they do!”

Access to Amazon Music HD will cost $9.99 a month, against $12.99 previously. Subscribers to Amazon Music Unlimited can now upgrade to Amazon Music HD at no extra cost in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, and Spain.
