Digital rights technology company Pex has hired Kirstine Stewart (pictured, below) as the company’s first Chief Revenue Officer. She joins Pex from theWorld Economic Forum, where she served as a Member of the Executive Committee as well as Head of the Shaping the Future of Media, Entertainment and Sport platform. She reports to Rasty Turek, Chief Executive Officer at Pex. “Kirstine’s expertise in the evolving media and content landscape will be invaluable to Pex as we work to address the changing needs and obligations of user-generated content platforms and rightsholders and forge a more free and fair internet,” said Turek. Pex said Stewart will "bring her experience managing content platforms and innovative media partnerships to Pex, leading the company toward its mission of supporting the creator economy with fair and transparent licensing through building key partnerships across industry stakeholders." Said Stewart: "Pex has a vision that equally embraces new tech-enabled content creators, the platforms they use, and copyright holders; because I share that vision I am excited to join Rasty and his exceptional team.”
Netflix has appointed former Electronic Arts and Facebook executive as Vice President of Game Development at the video streaming platform. He reports to Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters. Bloomberg said that Netflix will be building out its gaming team in the coming months.
Nancy Dubuc has been elected to the Board of Directors of Warner Music Group Corp. She has also been named chairperson of the Audit Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. Dubuc is currently Chief Executive Officer of VICE Media Group. At the same time, Thomas H. Lee announced his intention to step down from the company’s Board after more than 17 years of service. In 2004, he led the investor group which purchased the music company from Time Warner. Lee has been given the title of Director Emeritus of WMG. Len Blavatnik, Founder & Chairman of WMG's parent Access Industries, said: “Nancy is an exceptional addition to the Board. Her experience in visual and digital media, combined with her knowledge of youth culture and the entertainment market, make her well suited to help guide WMG’s growth."
Nicole George-Middleton has been promoted to Executive Director of the ASCAP Foundation, a position she will add to her current job of SVP of membership for the Foundation. She replaces Colleen McDonough, who retired after 21 years with the US rights organisation's Foundation “Nicole is an outstanding leader with exciting, fresh ideas for continuing the incredible work of The ASCAP Foundation in music education, in nurturing and developing aspiring songwriters and composers and in using music as therapy,” said ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews.
Horacio Rodriguez has been named CEO of the label WK Records and Head of Music for parent company WK Entertainment. He reports to CEO and founder Walter Kolm. Rodriguez was most recently as SVP, Marketing at Universal Music Latino, Machete Music & Capitol Latin. "I’m positive that under his leadership, he will take WK Records to the next level and continue reenergising the music strategy for WK Entertainment," said Kolm of Rodriguez. WK Records is expanding in the Regional Mexican genre, with WKMX, a newly-created division with offices in Mexico and the United States. WKMX will be led by Alberto de Leon, as GM & Co-Founder, and Juan Carlos Montes as EVP & Co-Founder. Both used to work for UMG.
Royalty-free music and video licensing platform Soundstripe has promoted Lauren Cutrell to Vice President of Product. In her expanded role, Cutrell will lead product vision, strategy, and definition for Soundstripe. Cutrell joined Soundstripe in 2018 as Director of Product and Scrum Master, building an in-house team of product managers and content curators to manage Soundstripe’s stock media subscription offering. “Lauren is an exceptional, user-focused product leader with a keen understanding of what today’s creators and marketers need to produce compelling video and other content,” said Travis Terrell, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Soundstripe.
Universal Music Group's Republic Records as promoted Kevin Lipson to Executive Vice President of Global Commerce and Digital Strategy. Based in New York, he reports to Executive VP/General Manager Jim Roppo. In his new role, Lipson will oversee commerce and streaming for the label’s roster on a global basis.
PR company SpinLab Communications has appointed Jill Mango (pictured, below) to the position of Vice President of Communications and Ally Norton to the position of Director of Communications at the company. Mango will head up SpinLab’s New York offices, while Norton will work out of the company’s headquarters in Los Angeles. They report to John Vlautin, CEO of SpinLab.
IRELAND
The steering committee of the Irish Association of Independent Music, composed of 12 members from across all sectors of the Independent music industry, has appointed music manager Gill Dooley to the role of Interim CEO. The news comes as AIM Ireland has been accepted as a member of IMPALA, the Brussels-based association representing independent music companies in Europe. “We will strive to represent a collective of people whose work is often misunderstood and undervalued," said Dooley. "And for those beginning in this industry, one which is often not seen as a legitimate career path, we will be there for support and guidance. In truth those who work independently within music – artist managers, music producers, music PRs, promoters, publishers, labels and more – contribute enormously to the country’s economy. They should be represented at a national and international level. AIM Ireland can help to regulate and professionalise many sectors within independent music."
FRANCE
Antoine Gouiffes-Yan has been appointed Managing Director of Warner Music France's Parlophone label. He replaces Christophe Palatre, who has held this position since 2013. Gouiffes-Yan was Director of Marketing at Paramount Pictures France since 2019. He reports to CEO Alain Veille.
BRAZIL
Universal Music Group is launching its distribution and services company for the independent sector Virgin Music Label & Artist Services in Brazil. Miguel Cariello has been appointed general manager of the company. He was served as content and GTS director for Universal Music Brazil since 2017. The launch coincides with a partnership agreement with indie label Work Show, one of Brazil's leading Sertanejo labels. The first signing under the new partnership is duo Henrique & Juliano.
AUSTRALIA
Natalie Waller has been elected Chair of the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), for a two-year term, effective immediately. She replaces Denis Handlin, the former Chairman & CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Australia & New Zealand, who left the company, and his position on the Board at ARIA in June amid reports of a toxic corporate culture at Sony. Waller is Head of ABC Music & Events, and has been a member of the ARIA Board since February 2019. She joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1998.
