DistroKid launches A&R tool powered by streaming data

By Emmanuel Legrand

Independent music distribution company DistroKid has launched Upstream, a new service that connects record labels and artists looking to be signed. Upstream allows artists who opt-in to automatically share their streaming data with approved record labels.

The first label that has agreed to participate in the project is Universal Music Group's Republic Records. DistroKid said Upstream will be free for DistroKid members, and that it won't take any rights or earnings from artists.

"By forming a relationship with the industry’s leading labels, DistroKid artists are able to identify potential partners who can accelerate their careers," said DistroKid Founder and CEO, Philip Kaplan.

DistroKid has hired music industry veteran Ché Pope to run the new Upstream initiative. Pope previously served as A&R at Warner Music, and was COO at Kanye West's record label G.O.O.D. Music
