Music royalties marketplace Royalty Exchange has named former artist manager and label owner Anthony Martini as its new CEO. He replaces founding CEO Matthew Smith, who will remain with the company as Chairman. Most recently, Martini founded independent record label Commission Records, and in 2019 sold a majority stake in the company to Big Noise. “Royalty Exchange is disrupting the financial landscape of the music business in favor of those who actually create the value in this industry — the artists. That’s a mission I can get behind and take to the next level,” said Martini.The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has appointed Terrence Hart as General Counsel, effective immediately. Hart joins AAP from the US Copyright Office, where he served as Assistant General Counsel. He previously served as Vice President of Legal Policy at the Copyright Alliance for six years. AAP President and CEO Maria A. Pallante described Hart as "a talented lawyer and precise thinker" who will be "a key advocate in promoting and protecting the Constitutional framework on which publishing houses of all sizes and sectors equally depend.”
Digital music specialist Jim Griffin has been hired as VP Digital Rights at Pex, the digital rights technology company.
Sony Music Publishing has promoted Tom Foley (pictured, below) to Senior Vice President, Worldwide Portfolio Management and Analysis. Based in the company’s Nashville office, Foley reports to Sony Music Publishing Global Chief Financial Officer Tom Kelly. In his new role, Foley is responsible for "providing analysis on the performance of the company’s investments around the world and working with regional and local management teams to maximise investment returns." Previously, Tom held the position of Vice President, North American Royalty Administration in Nashville.
BMI has appointed Byron Wright (pictured, below) as Executive Director, Creative, Atlanta, joining the R&B/Hip-Hop department of the US rights society. Wright will be responsible for "identifying, signing, and developing new talent while also maintaining relationships with existing affiliates, publishers, and administrators." He reports to the Vice President of Creative, Atlanta, Catherine Brewton. Wright returns to BMI after working for Epic Records as Senior Director of A&R.
Warner Chappell Music has promoted Micki Stern from Vice President to Senior Vice President, Clearance and Sync Licensing. In her new role, she will continue to report to Rich Robinson, EVP and Global Synchronisation Leader, and will work closely with Pat Woods, SVP of Licensing. Stern will focus on finding new opportunities that add value to songwriters at all stages of their careers.
CANADA
Graham Henderson, the former President and CEO of music trade organisation Music Canada, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the London Chamber of Commerce in London, Ontario.
LATIN AMERICA
Bruno Duque has been appointed head of TuneCore Latin America, overseeing the artist services platform in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Spain. The former Sony Music executive has been leading TuneCore Brazil for the past six months. He reports to Faryal Khan-Thompson, Vice President, International at TuneCore. “Independent music continues to grow in market share on a worldwide basis," said Khan-Thompson. "In Latin America in particular, there are many local artists, popular in their own countries, with so much potential to appeal to audiences around the world. With TuneCore and Bruno on the ground in LATAM, we are able to localize our operations and communicate with these artists to support them both locally and globally.”
UK
Livestream company Driift Live has appointed former Island Records UK Head of Digital Claire Mas as Chief Operating Officer. Based in London, she has been working in an advisory role for Driift since last summer. Driift has sold almost 500,000 tickets to consumers in more than 150 countries since the start of the Covid pandemic.
British record labels' trade organisation the BPI has promoted Casandra Strauss to the newly-created position of Director of Innovation & Special Projects.
NETHERLANDS
Lou Ottens, the Dutch engineer who invented the first cassette tape, has died at age 94, according to the Dutch news outlet NRC Handelsblad. Ottens was working for Dutch electronics giant Philips, where he also helped develop the compact disc.
AUSTRALIA
Sony Music Publishing has promoted Maree Hamblion (pictured, below) to Senior Vice President, International A&R. Based in the company’s Australia office, she reports to Johnny Tennander, MD, Scandinavia and SVP A&R, Europe and Damian Trotter, Managing Director for Australia. In her new position, Hamblion will "spearhead the company’s international A&R efforts, sign and discover songwriters, and create new opportunities and collaborations for the company’s songwriters across the globe."
